As an EMT, your primary focus is patient care and transportation to a hospital for more advanced medical attention. In contrast, Paramedics are trained to provide advanced life support care. Paramedic training might take up to two years, which is more time and money to invest.

I recerted CPR, ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) late in December. Passive oxygenation (via nonrebreather) and continuous cardiac compressions should no longer be used for cardiac arrest in absence of an advanced airway. The certs are good for two years.
