Connecticut recently added supraglottic airways to the BLS scope of practice. That means basic EMTs (emergency medical technicians with considerably less training than paramedics) with the approval of their sponsor hospital medical director, no longer have to rely on bag-valve-mask ventilation to breathe for patients in cardiac arrest.

The very low risk calls can typically be satisfied with basic life support (BLS) capabilities. Given the time, a BLS crew can begin life-sustaining measures or conduct an assessment for proper hand-off to the paramedics upon arrival. If found, it should be dispatched.

We occasionally get an inquiry asking to become a paramedic. A quick breakdown on the differences between an EMT-B(asic) and an EMT-P(aramedic) Basic Life Support (BLS) vs Advanced Life Support (ALS) So there it is. A good paramedic is a good basic first. Most of the 911 calls are BLS rather than ALS.

This shortage has disproportionally impacted paramedics, as evidenced in the NAEMT survey results published in May of 2022. A typical Charlie priority call, for instance, might prefer to have a paramedic respond timely. That ideal response might be within, say, 15 minutes.

I was a fresh paramedic with a passion to share my new found knowledge and skills. We continued providing non-transport BLS to events on campus. This was something he definitely didn't plan for but took it in stride. His first cohort had 17 students. Since then, the demand for the class has grown. I came on in the spring of 2015.
