Supraglottic Airways for BLS

Connecticut recently added supraglottic airways to the BLS scope of practice. That means basic EMTs (emergency medical technicians with considerably less training than paramedics) with the approval of their sponsor hospital medical director, no longer have to rely on bag-valve-mask ventilation to breathe for patients in cardiac arrest.

Defining Appropriate Responses in a Tiered System

The very low risk calls can typically be satisfied with basic life support (BLS) capabilities. Given the time, a BLS crew can begin life-sustaining measures or conduct an assessment for proper hand-off to the paramedics upon arrival. If found, it should be dispatched.
