Get ready for the application period, which opens August 1 State Farm® is teaming up with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) to award $500,000 in grants to local volunteer fire departments – the ultimate good neighbors. Through the State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program, 50 fire departments will receive $10,000 grants to help them obtain the equipment they need to increase responder safety and improve service to the community.

The deadline to submit a comment to OSHA about the proposed Emergency Response Standard is Monday, July 22. If enacted as-is, this standard would have a significant impact on the volunteer fire service, and many departments may be forced to shut down or operate outside the federal standard. It is critical you let OSHA know what parts of the standard your department would have difficulty complying with.

Any U.S. fire department that enrolls 50 percent of their active firefighters in the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer will be considered a Gold Helmet Department and receive a certificate, web badge, and social media posts to share.

On Tuesday, July 9, President Biden signed into law S. 870, the Fire Grants and Safety Act. This bill reauthorizes the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program, and U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) through September 30, 2028. NVFC Chair Steve Hirsch and Legislative Committee Chair Pat Thompson were present at the White House signing.
