AFG and SAFER Reauthorization Passes the House of Representatives

On May 8 the House of Representatives passed an amended version of S. 870, the Fire Grants and Safety Act, by a vote of 393 Yes, 13 No, and 1 present. This bill would reauthorize the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG), Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants, and U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) through the end of Fiscal Year (FY) 2028 and extend the statutory sunset for AFG and SAFER though the end of FY 2030.

On February 5, OSHA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to replace the agency’s “Fire Brigades” standard with a proposed new “Emergency Response Standard.

Bills Relating to PSOB Benefits and Volunteers’ Usage of UAS Advance

On May 16 two important pieces of legislation relevant to the volunteer fire service advanced through Congress. The first is the 2024 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization bill (P.L. 118-63), which was signed into law. The second is S. 930, the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act , which passed the Senate Judiciary Committee. Section 926 of P.L. 118-63 will make it easier for volunteer fire departments to use tethered drones.

The deadline to apply for four sets of turnout gear and four helmets through MSA and DuPont’s Globe Gear Giveaway is June 1. A total of 52 sets of gear and helmets will be awarded to 13 volunteer fire departments in 2024. To be eligible, departments must be over 50% volunteer, serve a population of 25,000 or less, be legally organized in the U.S. or Canada, and the person applying or department chief must be a member of the NVFC.
