The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is pleased to announce it has received a $740,000 Supplemental Public Sector Training (SPST) grant from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The SPST program provides funding to national nonprofit fire service organizations, which then train instructors to provide training to public-sector hazmat responders or those tasked with responding to accidents and incidents involving hazardous materials.

To improve volunteer first responders’ access to high-quality online education, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has partnered with Columbia Southern University (CSU) for the 16th year to award two NVFC members scholarships to CSU. Each scholarship will cover up to 60 credit hours towards any one of CSU’s online degree programs. This year’s recipients are Levi Robbins of Pleasant Hill, OH, and Ellen Yarborough of Wallingford, PA.

Safe and adequate personal protective equipment is essential to firefighters performing at their best. However, many volunteer fire departments lack the resources to purchase new gear, leaving them to function with old, torn, and non-compliant equipment. To help combat this issue, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has partnered with MSA Safety and DuPont Personal Protection to award 13 volunteer fire departments with new turnout gear and helmets in 2024.

For many people, Celine Dion’s announcement of her diagnosis with the condition in 2022 marked the first time they had heard of it. This limited awareness surrounding stiff person syndrome marks just one of the many challenges keeping this disease and other rare disorders in the dark.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has launched a new online resource center to better protect firefighters as well as to identify and prevent new and emerging hazards in the fire service earlier and faster. The NVFC, thanks to funding from the U.S. Forest Service, has released a new online course on enhancing community wildfire mitigation efforts through strategic relationship building.
