The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that in 2020, there were 676,900 volunteer firefighters in the U.S. This is compared to 897,750 in 1984, the first year the NFPA began tracking this number. The NFPA Fire Department Profile for 2020 found that 50% of all firefighters are between the ages of 30 and 49 years old.

After the drills were done, the EMS chief pulled me aside. Women are generally more likely to volunteer in their communities than men, both in formal and informal capacities. I was amazed by their knowledge and skills as well as their lighthearted nature and ability to joke with their peers even while completing serious tasks.
